A Dietitian’s Guide To Ordering At Food Trucks

If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with food trucks, than you know the pure joy that comes with the experience. There’s something magical about ordering at that outdoor counter, having your food prepared inside a vehicle souped up with kitchen gadgets, then grabbing your food and enjoying it al fresco. But sometimes the foods in those trucks can be heavy, jammed with saturated fat and calories. There’s good news though, with a few tips, you can still enjoy your favorite food trucks without feeling weighed down.

Tip 1: Just Ask!

Not sure what’s in that gyro or bahn mi? Then just ask! While either of those foods can be great, nutritious choices, sometimes they have mayo-based sauces that get heavily slathered on your sandwich. In that case, you can either order it on the side or ask for them to go “light” on it. Another thing to ask – how is that prepared? Is the chicken grilled or fried? Ask first and you’ll be informed so that you can make the best choice.

Tip 2: Split It!

Don’t go food trucking alone! Bring your friends and family! This not only makes the experience more fun, but it means plenty of sharing, so you’ll get to try several things, while also preventing potential over-indulgence. Everybody wins when you share food truck meals.

Tip 3: What’s Your Specialty?

That’s right, get what’s best at that food truck, even if it’s the bacon donut. Why? Well, because that’s what they’re known for, and you should try it. Key words, try it. That means you don’t have to eat the whole thing. You can either take a few bites and save it for later or share it. You could even ask the truck owner if you can order a half portion. Then, add some balance. Make the rest of your meal nutritious, and choose plenty of veggie-forward foods.

Tip 4: Brown Bag It!

Now that you’ve ordered that donut, there may not be another option for something more nourishing at that truck. If that’s the case, consider BYONF – bringing your own nutritious food. Pack some baby carrots, a little hummus, an apple and some whole grain crackers to enjoy BEFORE you eat a crumb of that donut!

Tip 5: Follow Your Truck on Social Media!

It’s true, you can follow them and not only learn about their location, but also their daily offerings. That can clue you in on whether or not you should hit them up that day. If you notice they’re aren’t any nutritious foods on the menu, maybe skip it and save it for another day. You can also use social media to communicate with the vendor. Ask them about the menu so that you can make an informed choice before you get there!
