Different Daiquiris You Need to Know

The daiquiri is one of the great warm weather cocktails: a refreshing mix of lime, sugar and rum, shaken with ice then strained. Sitting on a porch or patio with a daiquiri, whether you’re in Cuba or Calgary, it doesn’t get much better. There are many variations to the daiquiri, and they’re all worth trying (though maybe not at once).

The daiquiri was allegedly invented by an American mining engineer named Jennings Cox, who was working in Cuba, near Daiquiri Beach, around the time of the Spanish-American War. The cocktail gradually spread and gained popularity in the 1930s. F. Scott Fitzgerald slipped it into his novel This Side of Paradise, and Ernest Hemingway was a famous daiquiri lover—and diabetic, which is why his version does not include sugar.

In honor of National Daiquiri Day, here are a few of our favorites that you need to know about.

Method

  1. Place the pitted cherries, rum, and brown sugar in a bowl, stir, and let it sit at room temp for at least 10 minutes.
  2. Place all the daiquiri ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth (about 1 minute in high speed). Check for consistency, if you like your cocktail thicker, add more frozen mango, boozier? Add a splash more of rum.
  3. To serve, pour the frozen daiquiri on a glass, then top with a spoonful or two of the rum soaked cherries. Garnish with a cherry and a slice of orange.
