3 Incredible Hummus Hacks

A classic hummus is a beautiful thing. That doesn’t mean you can’t spice up your hummus from time to time with delicious results. I love hummus as much as the next person, but it’s nice to keep things interesting and experiment with different flavors from time to time. Our resident recipe genius The Artful Desperado did just that and ended up with three amazingly unique (and delicious, no doubt) hummus recipes you need to try:

Dhal Lentil Hummus

Dhal Lentil Hummus from @Luvoinc

Ingredients

  • 1 can of lentils (any kind you like), drained and rinsed
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 small pieces of ginger (about ½ inch long, peeled)
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 3-5 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a food processor with 3 tablespoons of olive oil and pulse until pureed. If needed add a couple more tablespoons of olive oil to get it nice and creamy. Don’t use more than 5 as it will be too greasy. You can also add a splash of water if it’s too dry.

Mayan Chocolate Hummus

Mayan Chocolate Hummus from @Luvoinc

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained, rinsed
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder (pure cocoa powder with no sugar added)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ground coffee, fine ground (or you can sub for instant coffee)
  • ¼ cup dark chocolate chips (at least 70% cocoa)
  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil
  • ¼ cup coconut milk

Instructions

Add all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth. Check for seasoning and add more maple syrup or cocoa depending on how sweet or bitter you like it. You can eat it as a spread on toast, or even as a dip with fruit!

Orange, Ginger, and Honey Hummus

Orange, Ginger, and Honey Hummus from @Luvoinc

Orange, Ginger, and Honey Hummus from @Luvoinc

Ingredients

  • 1 can chickpeas, drained, rinsed
  • ¼ cup tahini
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 small piece of ginger (about 1 inch long) peeled
  • 2 pinches cayenne pepper
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, peeled
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

Instructions

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Adjust seasoning if needed. If it’s too thick add a touch more of lemon juice or a splash of water.

You can have this hummus on rustic bread or use it in sandwiches instead of mayo. Add more olive oil and you can use it as a dressing on salads.
