Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells from outer surface of the skin, and it’s an essential part of grooming. If your skin looks dull, has lost its youthful glow, or you’re breaking out more than usual, dead skin cells may be responsible. Regular exfoliation can help restore your glow by removing the dead skin cells that have overstayed their welcome (where they ever invited to the party?!). This can reveal smoother, more youthful skin, replenish your glow, and unclog your pores. And it’s not just your face that needs this type of TLC – your whole body can benefit from a good sloughing on a regular basis. Try these tips for encouraging those pesky dead cells to take a hike, whether they’re hanging out at the top of your head or the bottom of your feet:
Scalp: Your Fingers
Vigorous massaging of your scalp when you’re shampooing your hair is great for removing dead skin cells that can negatively impact your hair growth. The massaging action can actually prevent hair loss by unclogging hair follicles and improving blood flow, leading to stronger, more lustrous hair.
Face: The Cleansing Brush
When it comes to exfoliating the delicate skin on your face, cleansing brushes are a great choice. A lot of grainy scrubs out there are too harsh on your skin and can leave microscopic tears (ouch!) on the surface. And we’ve all heard the horror stories of the plastic micro beads found in some exfoliating products ending up in the ocean. Instead, try using a cleansing brush with your favorite cleansing product to gently coax the dirt and dead cells from your face. It’s gentle enough to use daily as part of your skincare routine.
Lips: A Gentle Scrub
Just like the other skin on your face, your lips should not be neglected in the exfoliation department. You can find special lip exfoliating products at the drugstore, or you can make your own by mixing some sugar and coconut oil and gently massaging the mixture over your lips – both tasty and effective! You don’t need to do this every day – once or twice a week is good.
Body: Plenty of Options
The skin on the rest of your body is a lot tougher than up top, so you have more options for keeping it free from pesky dead skin cells. You’ll find oodles of body exfoliating products on the market so it really comes down to your personal preference. Some of these include: a body scrub, a loofah sponge combined with your favorite body wash, bar soap with built-in scrubbing agents like bits of pumice, or a DIY mixture like the sugar/coconut oil combo above. If you prefer to go the natural, DIY route, you can find plenty of recipes online, like one of these hydrating bath recipes. Exfoliating your body is something you can do every time you shower to keep your skin looking and feeling great. It’s also a great primer before shaving to ensure a close shave and prevent cuts.
Your feet have tougher skin and require the most elbow grease to remove the dead skin that can build up and leave them looking not-so-fresh. For this reason, it’s best to bring out the toughest exfoliator in the game: the almighty pumice stone. Pumice is a natural product as well – it’s actually porous volcanic rock! You can use it to remove flaky dry skin and even tough calluses. Just be sure to wet it before you start exfoliating and clean it thoroughly to prevent bacteria build-up.
