Reducing our reliance on plastic products just makes good sense for the environment and our health, especially when you consider that some plastic products can actually leech unhealthy chemicals into your food. Even the plastic products made free from toxic BPA can be just as bad. On top of that, plastic containers might bereusable but they don’t last as long as sturdier, non-plastic options.
Using plastic bags or containers to freeze food is a common practice because it’s convenient, with many plastic products made specifically for freezing. The good news is you don’t HAVE to freeze with plastic because there are several other options available. Some may take a little getting used to, but it’s worth it if you want to do better for Mother Earth.
Freeze food in glass jars
Yes, glass can be freezer-friendly! It has to be the right type of glass, though. Treehugger.com recommends Mason or Ball brand jars because the glass is thick enough to withstand the expansion that occurs as the contents freeze. They advise you to leave about an inch of space at the top of the jar to account for said expansion. Pyrex also makes sturdy glass containers that work well for freezing, however these come with both plastic and glass lids so they’re not completely free from the p-word.
Give metal a chance
Another long-lasting alternative to plastic containers? Metal containers! Just be sure you look for the containers that are as airtight as possible to minimize freezer burn, which can affect the flavor and nutritional content of your food. The old wax paper + aluminum foil trick
While not as long-lasting as the above two suggestions, freezing your food in wax paper and foil is another option, and it saves a lot of space in your freezer too. This one obviously works best when freezing more solid foods, unless you freeze your liquids before storing them by using a muffin tin or something similar. Once your liquids are frozen, you can pop them out of the container, wrap them in wax paper, then foil, and they’re ready for their quality time in the icebox.
